Lyrics

Like a shooting star I raced to her,
I shone like the moon in her bright aura,
But like a shooting star I burned up in,
The atmosphere of tie-downs and commitment.

For every time I have it made I lose it all,
And I always find that what I’ve left behind was a better man.

Like a crested wave I would leave the sea,
To rise and fall deep within her reefs,
But like a crested wave I’d yearn to be free,
To return to the ocean of careless singularity.

For every time I have it made I lose it all,
And I always find that what I’ve left behind was a better man.

It has always been this way,
I have always been the same,
I would throw my loaded dice,
And would cheat within their game,
I would always act the part,
I’d lie and I’d betray,
Even though I hate myself for it,
I shall always be the same,
Until perfection comes my way.

For every time I have it made I lose it all,
And I always find that what I’ve left behind was a better man.

For every time I’ll have it made I’ll lose it all,
And I’ll always find that what I left behind was a better man.

Notes

Fickle was originally written on an acoustic guitar. The original song consisted of the verse-chorus-bridge structure that is evident on this definitive recording. The extensive intro and outro, plus the odd time-signatue riff after the second chorus, were added during the recording phase to flesh out the composition.
