This album was my first album in just over ten years, the hiatus due mainly to bringing up a young family. I had plenty of songs for a number of albums by the end of 2015 but I felt that I wanted to start on fresh material. As such, all the songs on this album were written from late 2015 to mid 2016 - my first song-writing sessions since 2008.
I made a conscious decision to include no keyboards on this album, so all instruments were recorded live except for the drum kit programming.
The album focuses on the theme of Phantom Islands - islands that were printed on old maps but have been proven to no longer exist in the real world. The reasons for their non-existence are varied and provide the subjects of the five middle songs. These are sandwiched between two similar title tracks.
The process involved the investment in Cubase 8 Artist and a new microphone. It also involved the servicing of my classical guitar and my family's old mandolin.
Synth demos were completed for all tracks by the middle of 2016. To this the bass guitar was added initially followed by the electric guitar. With a new microphone acquired, the classical guitar and mandolin were recorded before the vocals. By November 2016, most of the recording was completed. The tracks were mixed down and a number of vocal pick-ups identified. Due to a busy December, the album was not completed by the year's end so the last vocal pick-ups and final mixing took place in the first few weeks of 2017.
The cover of the album is a stylised reworking of Abraham Ortelius's 1579 Septentrionalium Regionum map, which features a large number of phantom islands. The CD version's inner booklet contained the lyrics to each song plus the following information:
